Description
A Tale of Plastic, represents a hope that our current relationship with our plastic footprint is on its way out.
The Fluke is a life-sized depiction of an adult gray whale, in the act of 'fluking', or raising its fluke vertically above the surface in order to propel itself to the depths.
The interior skeleton is made of reclaimed steel, while the outside is made of post consumer plastic. The blubber is made of 55 gallon barrels that are used to transport a lot of soaps and chemicals before they are individually packaged, as well as broken curbside trash cans, representing the macro of our waste cycle. The barnacles are made up of single use plastic water bottles, symbolizing our personal role in the waste stream.
Commissioned by Dana Point Harbor and the Festival of Whales. Currently on display at the entrance of the harbor, and may move to new location after the new harbor construction is completed.
A local organization, Stand up to Trash collected all of the single use water bottles in the community and in local beach clean ups. During the Festival of Whales they sued the tail as a hub for education and continue to use it in meetups and events for their organization.
